Motorcycle Leather Introduction

Leather Motorcycle Jacket Motorcycle leather jackets
The smell, look and feel make leather motorcycle jackets so cool. A leather jacket should fit a bit looser than a non-leather motorcycle jacket (so you can wear something underneath on cold days).

leather motorcycle pants Motorcycle leather pants
Leather pants should fit snugly around your legs but still leave room around the hips and knees. Check for a good seal at your feet. Padding is needed around the waist and on the knees. Pants should be comfortable in a riding position.

motorcycle leather chaps Motorcycle leather chaps
You use chaps to cover your normal pants/jeans so they shield you from cold and wind. They are easy to remove (held in place by a waist belt and straps behind the legs). The back of chaps are open (make sure they really fit and can't slip around your legs in a crash). The big advantage of chaps is they are easily removable.

Motorcycle Leather Review Tips & Checks

Long lasting
Leathers should last you a long time (this is why it is wise to stick to more traditional styles and colors). A low brand nylon jacket needs to be replaced every 3 years (intense use), a high quality one after about 6 years but a leather jacket could last you as long as 10 years or more. When selecting motorcycle leather gear it is something to take into consideration.

Breathe ability
Leather breathes so it won't get clammy on a humid day. Do however make sure you maintain it properly to ensure it keeps this feature. More on motorcycle leather care later on.

Color
Leathers are available in different colors. But how the color is actually obtained affects the quality. The dye (color) can be sprayed onto the motorcycle leather. This lets the dye only go into the top layer of the leather (if you scratched it, you would find another color underneath).

The other method is to let the dye soak into the jacket. In this case the leather is completely colored (if you scratched it, you would find the same color). Soaking the motorcycle leather makes the gear more expensive but the color lasts longer .

Not waterproof
It isn't wise to use your leathers as if they are waterproof. Leathers will soak up the water, which washes the oils out of it (making the leather dry and cracked). You need a rain suit to protect your leathers from the elements.

Care
Leathers need to be cared for. Leather often includes a shiny coat to protect it from stains and burns. Still you need to wipe down your leathers with a damp cloth once in a while. If the dirt is really bad send it to a specialized cleaner.

If your leathers get wet just let them dry slowly. Do not use extra heat. Once dry apply a leather restorer to get the oils back in. This will keep the leather supple.

If during normal use you feel your jacket getting dry, use a light amount of petroleum jelly to soften it up again. Taking good care of leather will make it last a life time.

Of course you can get protective treatment for leather, just make sure it doesn't influence your breathe-ability.
